Precipitation info in currentConditions

According to the API documentation the precip field contains "The amount of precipitation that fell or is predicted to fall in the specified time period."

The meaning seems clear for hourly or daily data, but what does this mean for currentConditions, which is an instantaneous moment, not a span of time?

I tried to get data for various locations where it was currently raining, but precip for currentConditions was always 0, and preciptype was always null, no matter what location I tried. The values for icon and conditions never indicated rain either, just "cloudy" and "overcast".

Is there simply no at-this-moment precipitation information, with the current hourly data being the closest thing available?
